Lesser Known Beaches Of Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is a tropical island found in the deep blue waters of the Indian Ocean and the Bay of Bengal.The country is blessed with over a thousand miles of Golden pristine beaches.Eventhough island is small there are different kind of beaches spread all around the country, There are long golden ones and there is dainty ones with soft white sand. There are beaches where only wind and wave reaches where there is no footstep for miles. Some have a slowly, slowly vibe and some have a lively party vibe. All together every beach of Sri Lanka is gorgeous and eye candy.

Below mentioned is some of the lesser known beaches of Sri Lanka.

1. Polhena Beach

Polhena is a beautiful beach situated in Matara district is just six kilometers away from Matara. The name Polhena is derived from the Sinhalese word for the coconut filed “Pol” (Coconut) “hena” (Field). In Polhena beach there is a naturally grown coral reef that softens the high waves coming from the sea .This makes it’s a shallow pool kind of safe place to swim throughout the year .Polhena is also a hotspot for beautiful fishes and this has make it a source of income to youth around Polhena beach.

At the beach there are vendors who sells goggles, snorkeling equipment’s and buoys. There is a lifeguard station and a Police booth. There are several hotels and restaurants around the area and a small temple and it’s a nice place to chill out with your families and friends on your way to down south.

2. Secret Beach Mirissa

The secret beach in Mirissa is hidden form the main beach of Mirissa and you will find the area a hush little locale. The secret beach is pristine, private and beautiful. It’s a fine example to Sri Lanka’s tropical prime beauty. The Mirissa Secret beach has two coves of clear blue water and toffee-shaded sand, low-hanging trees for bountiful shade, and a fine sprawl of isolated shore to lie upon. It has mellow and balmy water and waves. It’s a great spot to peaceful wade.

The beach is named as secret beach because it’s not right off the main road and its bit difficult to find. You will have to climb a hill about for a twenty minutes and a quick climb down a rocky cliff and you are at the Secret Beach.

3. Ranna Beach

Ranna beach is an awesome getaway for the honeymooners and it’s a sleepy off the track hamlet. Ranne beach is famous as a secluded beach. You will have to stroll down six kilometers to reach the Ranna beach and its famous for turtle sightings because its adjoining the Rekawa beach.If you take a stroll in this pristine beaches during January to April on full moon nights you will come across this amazing creatures that lay eggs on the shore and disappears in to the sea in the night.The Kalametiya birds sanctuary and the Mulkirigala Buddhist temple is just merely a few miles away . If you prefer little bit of solitude on your tour this is one of best beaches for it.

4. Madiha Beach

Madiha is one of those pristine beaches that have a safe area to snorkel and surf. It’s one of that beaches that you can walk right in to the sea from your room to beach and indulge in surfing or either in snorkeling .There are bunch of palm trees and coral reefs to explore and the locals are so friendly . There are chances that you can spot turtles and some other marine life around the beaches of Madiha . You will get plenty of local restaurants offering mouthwatering sea food and great curry not to mention there are plenty of options to enjoy a cocktail and watch the sunset over Madiha beach.

5. Habaraduwa Beach

Habaraduwa beach is one of those massive beaches where it’s one side borders to the sea and other side borders to the jungle. You can walk along the beach for kilometers and kilometers without any hesitation and you can enjoy the sand, jungle and the sea and feel the breeze coming across the sea and the beach is less crowded. There are mix of small hotels and villas alongside the beach so you can enjoy your stay at the beach.

6. Goyambokka Silent beach

Goyambokka beach is a picture postcard perfect beach and it’s a good place to wander up and down. It’s not far from Tangalle and it will take around 10-15 minutes from Tangalle to reach the beach. It’s consist with hundreds of meters white sand and clusters of palm trees and waves that constantly kisses the shore. The area is less crowded and there are few restaurants in the area which are not that much crowded. If you wondered a bit you can find hammocks attached to the trees and It is a really a blissful place where there is no place for worries. The natural beauty and serenity is incredible around the goyambokka beach.

7. Hiriketiya beach

Hiriketiya beach is wine glass shaped beach and provides a safe spot to swim. It’s a great place to surfers and there are no much constructions on the beach and most of the area is filled with jungle. This beach is situated away from the main road and near to the Matara highway so it’s mostly free of screeching and horn sounds of passing vehicles. There are few places to eat and drink near Hiriketiya beach and its walking distance to Dickwella. Hiriketiya is a lovely place to watch beautiful sunset.
